Nebraska City, population 7,300, is the county seat of Otoe County and, as such, is a regional hub of commerce and activities serving many more than the population within its immediate borders. The community is situated on the West Bank of the Missouri River approximately 45 miles south of Omaha, 45 miles east of Lincoln, and 145 miles north of Kansas City. Nebraska City is home of Arbor Day, the Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Center, and the Mayhew Cabin, which is Nebraska's only site on the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. These are a few of the 11 museums and attractions that make this community one of the most significant Tourism destinations in the Mid-west.
Many visitors make an annual pilgrimage to the area’s renowned Apple Orchards and wineries. Major employers include: The Arbor Day Foundation, American Meter, Omaha Public Power District, St Mary’s Community Hospital, Nebraska City Public Schools, & Cargill Meat Solutions. The unemployment rate hovers around 5.4%. Nebraska City is one of approximately 2000 cities across the United States that has chosen to provide its own Electric Service through a not-for-profit, publicly owned electric utility. Nebraska City Utilities also provides natural gas, water, and sanitary sewer service.
