Did you know J. Sterling Morton, the Founder of Arbor Day, called Nebraska City home? Indeed, the holiday began here, over 130 years ago, because Mr. Morton and his wife, Caroline, loved trees so much that they wanted to plant them all over their estate and throughout the Nebraska countryside. As the Secretary Agriculture under Grover Gleveland, Morton was instrumental in formally establishing the national (now international) holiday.
As home to internationally-celebrated Arbor Day, Nebraska City takes its beautiful trees seriously, and 2013 will mark our 141st Annual Arbor Day Celebration. We hope you’ll join us for the many festival activities all weekend!
The annual Arbor Day Celebration features children’s educational activities, a parade, craft show, flea market, free trees, all-you-can-eat chili cook-off, home & garden show, commemorative tree plantings, special award ceremonies, and, of course, tours of Arbor Lodge, the home of J. Sterling Morton. Don’t miss the live music, tree-climbing demonstrations, or carraige rides.
