Event Description: Hot Wax/Cool Art: Exploring Encaustic Painting Taught by Margaret Berry at Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Nebraska City Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Experience the magic of an ancient art form! Margaret is an enthusiastic and experienced teacher of the encaustic process for both beginning and skilled artists. This medium was used over 2500 years ago by the Greeks to adorn their ships, by the Romans to colorize marble sculpture and by the Egyptians to paint the famous Fayum mummy portraits. Today it is being rediscovered by contemporary artists. If you have been looking for the translucent qualities of watercolor, the surface character of oils, the fast drying advantages of acrylics and the exciting feel of ceramic surfaces, you will fall in love with this versatile medium. Encaustic is composed of beeswax, tree resin, and pigment, applied hot and fused to create a beautiful, translucent and striking surfaces. With Margaret’s guidance, you will explore brushing, scraping, layering and pouring wax onto wood panels. Learn how to combine encaustic with other mediums such as drawing, photography, printmaking and collage. Explore image transfers, texture development and working with oil sticks. Demos will be interspersed with ample time to turn out several finished works. No experience necessary. Perfect class for art educators, budding artists and professionals alike! Come learn, experiment and have fun! Margaret serves as an artist-in-residence for the Nebraska Arts Council and teaches Hot Wax/Cool Art workshops throughout the U.S. She paints in encaustic and also incorporates photography and collage in her work.
